Setenil de Las Bodegas
Setenil de Las Bodegas, unique amongst Andalucía’s myriad Pueblo Blancos, is a fascinating and above all unique place to visit. This small town of approx. 3000 inhabitants follows the meanderings of the Rio Trejo and its narrow and steep streets tumble down the sides of the valley. However its defining and famous feature is of course its streets and cave houses set directly into the cliffs carved by the river. Originally used as bodegas (hence the name Setenil de Las Bodegas,) many of these caves have a simple façade on the front and inside the bare rock is exposed.
Surrounded by a fertile plain, the town is justly famous for its delicious local products. Ranging from meats to cheeses, including the local specialty – Payoyo – and from craft beer to wine, as well course as dozens of varieties of locally produced olive oil and honey, it offers a chance to taste some truly local and traditional tapas. Setenil da Las Bodegas is a true Marbella Escape, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the Costa del Sol and is a special and unique start to our Ronda tour.
