Semana Santa 2017 in Estepona Municipality in Málaga Province

By Georgina Shaw | 24 Jan 2018 | Ferias and Fiestas

This year Easter starts on the 9th of April with Palm Sunday and finishes with Easter Sunday on the 16th of April and it’s a wonderful time to visit Spain. As a Catholic country, “Semana Santa” or Holy Week is very important and is celebrated with a lot of pomp and ceremony and almost daily processions through the streets. Following these processions is a great way to explore a town and see traditional Spanish culture in action.

Estepona captivates visitors with its maze of white streets, decked with colourful pots brimming with flowers - it is the very essence of a coastal Andalusian town and a perfect backdrop for the wonderful Easter processions. The town holds stunning processions through the Old Town, which start in the afternoon of Palm Sunday with a procession known as “La Borriquita”, where children accompany a statue of Jesus throughout the route with palm leaves. This is recommended for families, as it is happy and at a great time of day to enjoy the town before and after.

There are processions on Holy Wednesday and Maundy Thursday on the 12th and 13th of April, which are solemn, yet powerful night time processions lit by candlelight. Good Friday’s procession which goes on late into the night includes five incredible floats with religious figures depicting part of the Easter story including the crucifixion of Christ. This procession is in complete silence and is very intense and moving. The Easter week ends on a joyous note on Easter Sunday with the procession of the resurrection which takes place in the morning and see thousands of people take to the streets.

If you want to experience Estepona at Easter, a great base is the Kempinski Hotel Bahía. It enjoys a privileged position by the beach, surrounded by luscious subtropical gardens and just 3km from the beautiful town of Estepona. It is the only 5* Grand Luxe hotel in the area, with 128 spacious rooms and 17 luxury suites, a spa and four restaurants offer guests a wide range of Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine.
