Daiquiri is actually the name of a beach and an iron mine in Cuba. A drink using local, easily obtainable ingredients was invented around 1902 by the owner of the mine. Crushed ice was put into a tall glass and sugar was added. Then the juice of local limes was squeezed over the ice, local rum was added and the whole thing stirred together.
The drink developed as it became popular in the bars of New York
in the 1940s and it was shaken in a cocktail blender before being poured into a smaller glass. More like the martini. Now try adding
fresh or frozen fruit in an electric blender to the lime juice and
sugar syrup. The result is refreshing, delicious and almost healthy! It’s even great without any alcohol at all when it´s your turn to do the driving.
Use 1 part lime juice, 2 parts sugar syrup, 4 parts rum to fresh or frozen fruit of your choice. Try different rums to change the taste and even add extra flavours such as rosemary or basil to really be different.
