In the northeast of Granada province is a Parque Natural that provides some of the most contrasting climatic conditions of any park in Andalucia, The Sierra de Baza Parque Natural. The mountainous areas, over 2,000 metres in height, can be snow covered wildernesses in winter. On the lower levels, overlooking the Guadix and Baza basins, arid, rounded hills, provide enough fertile ground for steppe farming.
The climatic contrasts are equalled by the complex geological processes that created beds of slate, quartzite and marble that freely drain their river channels to the depression of Baza, while in the limestone rock, water penetrates the strata forming a magnificent aquifer that emerges through springs and spas in the plains. The best example is found in the Spa at Zújar, at the foot of the Jabalcón mountains.
