The only survivor of the Umayyad dynasty, he landed on the coast of Almuñecar on the 15th August 755. He later founded the Emirate of Córdoba which was independant of Bagdad and so began a new dynasty in Al-Andalus which acheived moments of great spledour. Almuñecar Town Hall erected the statue in his honour. The statue is a piece of work by Miguel Moreno, a sculptor from Granada
