The name pina colada directly translates from Spanish as strained pineapple, a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice that should be ideally used in the preparation of this drink. It’s a sweet cocktail made with rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice, blended with ice and garnished with a pineapple wedge.
The earliest known story states that a Puerto Rican pirate gave his crew a beverage of coconut, pineapple and white rum. This was known as the famous piña colada but the recipe died with him in 1825.
The Caribe Hilton claims their bartender created the drink in 1954 to capture the true nature and essence of Puerto Rico. The hotel was presented with a plaque in 2004 to celebrate the drink’s 50th anniversary.
In 1978 Puerto Rico officially proclaimed the pina colada as its national drink.
