The EU Digital Covid Certificate is a document that allows travel between EU countries, simply stating that a person has been vaccinated against COVID-19, has recovered from the disease or has a negative test in the last 48/72 hours as established by the different countries.
The EU Digital Covid Certificate is not compulsory. However, if you do not have the EU digital COVID certificate, you can travel, but the admission process is slower and additional measures can be requested, such as tests or quarantines. This certificate is simple, secure, reliable and free, and you can have it in electronic or paper format.
The EU Digital Covid Certificate is due to be in place by the 1st July 2021 but Spain started issuing the certificates early, on the 9th June. Spain has become one of the first European countries to be capable of issuing and recognising the certificate.
The EU Digital COVID Certificate will be issued, in electronic or paper format. The electronic digital version can be viewed on a mobile phone.
The EU digital COVID certificate contains the strictly necessary information: name of the holder, date of birth, date of issue, relevant information about the vaccine, diagnostic test or recovery and a unique identifier. This data remains in the certificate and is not stored or retained when it is verified in another Member State.
You can request the certificate if you meet either of these conditions:
- You have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in Spain.
- You have recovered from the disease and you can document it with a PCR (polymerase chain reaction test) with a positive result taken more than 11 days previously.
- To access the application, you will need to have a digital Certificate or permanent Clave.
- To sign the application, you will need Clave Firma or the AutoSignature program.
The time taken between applying for the certificate and receiving it will vary depending on the number of applications in progress and whether it is necessary to verify information with additional documents.
If you do not or cannot apply on line then, if you have had a course of injections, you should receive your EU Digital Covid Certificate by post. You may have to wait for 3 months or longer. (Author's note: I received my postal copy 10 weeks after the second injection.)
The webserver hosting the application form is occasionally overwhelmed by the number of simultaneous applications. As a result people are seeing the application spooling and eventually timing out. The answer is to try again when the server is quiet, 2am is good. Seriously, the server is busy during the normal working day, 9am to 5pm. Try outside those times.

Thank you for the extremely clear and helpful information. Quick question though… I had the booster yesterday. I received my Covid Certificate, for the initial vaccines, a few weeks ago. Will I automatically receive another for the booster?

Do you know if we are able to get a certificate for the booster vaccine? If we are, what do we have to do? Thanks
